Fashion | Bora Aksu #LFW

Monday, 15 September 2014

As some of you may know, if you have read previous posts is that I worked backstage at London Fashion Week for Bora Aksu, I was a dresser so I was very hands on with the clothing. Usually I would relate Fashion Week with really over the top "who would wear that" clothing, however I think it's all changed, because I would wear everything Bora had designed. His designers were perfection. The two collections, one which was very girly, soft light pieces which were white and light toned dusky pink, and the second collection also white but with blue, however more structured pieces rather than floaty. Also the outfits were topped of with the most amazing jewelled pieces. Makeup and hair was super simple, to make sure all eyes were on the designs. To hear about my experience of working backstage I will link it just below.

Photography | the city.

I absolutely love visiting Primrose Hill, and I live fairly near to it, so it's usually my summer destination, I even go there in the evenings to sit on the hill and stare at the beautiful view that is the lit up London city, its breath taking , and I think everyone should witness it. So I didn't think there was any better place to do another set of photos than Primrose Hill, of course, although it was day time it was still beautiful. This wasn't exactly a planned shoot, I just decided to take my camera out with me and my beautiful friend let me take some snaps of her. In the editing process of this shoot I was set on having them black and white, in colour they were amazing because she had a bright red top which contrasted with the black shinny, disco pants but black and white looked a lot better especially because the sky was grey that day. I have a lot more shoots to show you soon, which this same beautiful model, so come back to see more.

Photography | In the Woods

This is something new I've wanted to do on the blog, my main and most passionate hobby is definitely the world of photography. From starting my a-level course up to now two years later, I've been certain that I want to be a photographer, whether this will be my main career or a side lined extra part in my career, I'm not sure on yet but I love it. This was the first independent shoot that I did, it was only me, my model and my camera. No extra team or assistants, it was just us, I think the most important thing today when wanting to become a photographer, is to first thing buy a camera doesn't matter whether its a DSLR or just a camera phone, everyone starts somewhere with their own individual style. I was grateful to be gifted a DSLR by my parents on my birthday, and its been my baby ever since. This shoot was for an assignment in college and it was following the theme of a fairly tale, with inspiration taken from Kirsty Mitchell, check out her photography because it's amazing. The woodland location suited very well with the mouse mask, and it was fashion photography so I wanted an eccentric outfit, and this was actually my prom dress, very sparkly I know, but I thought it looked very nice with the style and theme of the shoot. My model who is a friend of mine is extremely beautiful, who has gorgeous blonde hair and bright blue eyes as you can see, and these aspects really contrasted with the location.
I hope you enjoy this post and like my photography, I will have more of my shoots posted up shortly.

Experience | Backstage London Fashion Week

Sorry in advance for the poor photo quality, these were taken on my IPhone in a rush, but there decent enough for you to get the idea of what it will be like. I absolutely loved this experience and will definitely do it again next fashion week but for more shows. For the job as a dresser I emailed a few designers via their contact details on the London Fashion Week Schedule website, doesn't matter whether you email a sales or press contact they will direct you to the right person. I only emailed about five designers and it was only a few weeks before fashion week, but I would advise you to email a couple of months in advance and email every single designer scheduled to showcase, because every designer will need a load of dressers. Also understand that this is an unpaid, voluntary job which you should be happy with, as they are giving you first hand experience into the fashion industry, which you can meet many professional industry contacts. Also use the 'Fashion Workie' website to find dresser positions, for Fashion Week and also other fashion shows.

On the day that I was working which was only yesterday while I am writing this, I was so nervous, yet so excited, I had always wanted to work backstage. As I made my way into backstage door B, I walked into a bunch of people watching the makeup tutorial of how the makeup should be. I met some lovely co-dressers and we chatted for a while as there was plenty of time to waste. The clothes hadn't arrived just yet but once they did it was two outfits per rail, and you teamed up with another dresser. So two dressers per model which has two outfits. My model was Viktoria, she was really nervous as this was her first ever catwalk but she was so lovely.

I was surprised how calm it was actually going, as I had a vision of clothes flying everywhere and everyone running around frantically. Well it was calm for the first outfit walk as they were they outfits they had rehearsed in so there was plenty of time, but once your model runs to you for second outfit change, that's when it got hectic. First outfit for my model was a playsuit which was really easier to take off, however the second rushed outfit, took a while, the top had a dodgy zip, and be prepared to run with your model to the line up queue, I was still doing her accessories a second before her walking out.

That may sound stressful but it's only stressful for a minute and there plenty of people to help with small aspects so don't panic, it's a brilliant experience and would definitely recommend anyone who wants to go into fashion to work as a dresser even if it's just one show.

Backstage Dresser Tips:

  • Wear all black, comfortable clothing.
  • Don't get in the way of anyone, including models, management and most importantly the designer.
  • Go to the toilet way before its dress time because your end up holding it in.
  • If you have time, speak to industry professionals, not if their busy!
  • Don't just stand around, make yourself aware of how the clothing works, such as zips.
  • Communicate with your model, they don't bite!

Fashion | Model Behaviour #LFW

It was a privilege having worked with some of the beautiful models in the morning backstage at the Bora Aksu show, but my favourite part is seeing them run through the courtyard to what ever else show their in a rush for, but sometimes its easy enough to stop them for a photo. These two beautiful models were been snapped and I thought I'd take advantage. As much as I love fashion to have colour, and be bold and interesting, my favourite style is simple, monochrome, effortlessly chic clothing, like these two models. It often looks like you've thrown together a basic tee with some basic bottoms, some leather boots or Nike trainers and out the door you go. These models may only be wearing these outfits because it's comfortable for them to throw off when changing but I love it. Recently flicking through the ASOS mag, I noticed that this thrown together, dress down chic look is actually a trend, which is great because I don't like to make a whole load of fuss day to day, so I'm rocking this look every single day, check!

One thing I love about going to Somerset house and standing in the courtyard at London Fashion Week is that your guaranteed to bump in to some hot celebrities. I had an extremely long day yesterday at fashion week, with working backstage and then travelling home for my camera and travelling back, but it was worth it because I got to snap up these beautiful people. Earlier in the day without my camera I saw the amazingly beautiful Laura Whitmore, Millie Mackintosh, and Jordaan Dunn, however I had no camera and no phone battery. However later in the day, I got to snap up Made in Chelsea's Rosie and Hugo. Rosie was incredibly stylish, and changed three times! A little late on after I heard a massive commotion and saw the two beauty's that are Jade and Leigh-Anne from little mix. This photo was pictured after the show when the fuss had gone and I could personally ask them for a photo. They was extremely lovely and polite. And of course looked amazing.
